About |
The Karuk tribe, which translates to "usptream" people, is the second largest tribe in California. They speak the Karuk language which is part of the Hokan language family. Unfortunately, after World War II, ceremonialism fell off, but it was revived in the beginning of the 1970's. Fortunately for them, the Klamath National Forest helps them keep non-participating interruptions to a minimum by posting the dates in which rafting and other river usages are limited to outsiders. See, the Karuk people do not have these ceremonies to entertain outsiders, these ceremonies are very important and they require concentration, not a bunch of people in the way, taking pictures, asking for translations or other disturbances.
They are currently in Happy Camp and are neighbors to the Yurok Tribe, which translates to "downstream" people. |
